At Bedford Memorial Hospital, officials say they are devoted to quality patient care which is why millions of dollars will be utilized to renovate its emergency department. By the March of next year, the ER (emergency room) will look different as a $4 million renovation will initiate in a few weeks. Patti Jurkus, CEO of Bedford Memorial Hospital is showing of the layouts for the changes regarding the emergency department Jurkus said, "We renovated the medical surgical unit, we upgraded the ICU and now it is time for the ED.”
The ED (emergency department) will undergo a complete renovation to assist improve the quality of care for those in Bedford County. "The emergency department sees about 16,000 sufferers a year. And we saw an 11% increase from the time period of 2014-2016. And we anticipate continued growth," stated Jurkus. When renovations start, the emergency department will shift to another part of the hospital to keep patients safe. A temporary location will be set up on the day of May 18 for about 6 to 8 months. Jurkus claimed, "At that point, we’ll be treating sufferers in 2 areas until we can get everyone moved upstairs to the temporary location.” Due to the renovated emergency department also comes updated services and adding new medical equipment to sustain making this a full-service hospital. Stacey Hopkins, RN director for the emergency department said, "This community is increasing quickly. We’re full quite often. And we take care of any and every patient that comes in. So we require the space to do that. The equipment to do that in the staff to do it.” Stacey Hopkins, claims the hospital and its staff are excited about the latest renovations, which has been in the works for more than 2 1/2 half years. Once complete the ER will go from a 10 bed to a 14-bed treatment facility. For this process, the hospital has increased staffing for both the temporary facility and the new facility, employing 3 more registered nurses and several physicians.
